Guide to Computer Generated Graphic Images

back to Sign Talk

Due to the fact that most of signs this day and age are computer generated to some degree. Here is a brief table to give you a understanding of what we need to create your sign.

There are two Types of Computer generated Graphic Images

Vector Images
A vector image is a series of points mapped out to create objects. This is needed for creating Vinyl cut signs so the Plotter (Vinyl Cutter) can map were to make the cuts on the vinyl.

Bitmap Images
A bitmap is a pixel based image ( like a TV screen ) due to there being millions of pixels the plotter can not cut from these images. For Digital printing we need to print Photos as bitmaps.

File Types we prefer:

Vector Images
.CDR - Corel Draw files. Make sure all text is converted to lines and is saved for PC/IBM. Logos created in Corel Draw are vector images.

.AI - Adobe Illustrator. Make sure all text is converted to lines and is saved for PC/IBM. Logos created in Adobe Illustrator are vector images.

.EPS - Encapsulated PostScript. Make sure all text is converted to lines. This file can contain Both vector & bitmaps
.

.TIF -
Tiff files are the best Universal Bitmap available to date. To use for digital printing save the image to size and no less than 100 dpi. For High Quality Digital Printing please save image as 300 dpi at approx A3 size.

.BMP - BMP files are Designed for Windows and for its application such as desktop backgrounds. This file is possible to use for digital printing but the quality is not as clear as a Tiff. Save the image to size and no less than 100 dpi. For High Quality Digital Printing please save image as 300 dpi at approx A3 size.

.CPT - CPT files are created in Corel Photo Paint . The quality is as good as a Tiff and offers great extra such as layers and transparent backgrounds. To use for digital printing save the image to size and no less than 100 dpi. For High Quality Digital Printing please save image as 300 dpi at approx A3 size.

.PSD - PSD files are created in Adobe Photo Shop. The quality is as good as a Tiff and offers great extra such as layers and transparent backgrounds. To use for digital printing save the image to size and no less than 100 dpi. For High Quality Digital Printing please save image as 300 dpi at approx A3 size.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If Possible do not save images as GIF or JPEG they can be used but they are very poor quality.
These files were created for the internet and are basically for viewing on a monitor.
When enlarged the photo tends to be very patchy.

All files can be sent via 100 meg Zip disk, Memory Cards. DVD, CD ROM, WIN ZIPPED
or via e-mail at artwork@subaksigns.co.uk (before emailing please ask for recommended file size)
